At a terrible time, Lena finds herself holding the amulet just as she has a strong inner thought or desire -- something she wishes someone else would do, such as shut up or go away or anything both negative and unlikely. The person she is thinking of then feels a horrible mental pressure to do just that very thing. They don't have to succumb (what with godmoding being bad, and all), but the mental impulse is undeniably there. Of course, using the amulet like this can prove terribly corrupting, can't it? Especially if she needs to wish people would stop investigating this very powerful artifact of forbidden Dictation she possesses...
The trick to truly regaining the amulet is to use it on herself, by forbidding herself from using it like that any more or something similar. Once she does that, all these effects vanish, and everything is back to normal.
On the surface, Lena is very much a cool, rebellious teenager. Despite being created from Magica's shadow to enact her revenge, Lena is conscious of her own thoughts and feelings separate from Magica, and wants nothing more than to be free from the witch and live her own life. In the everyday, she is indifferent to most things, sarcastic at every opportunity, and willing to risk some trouble to have a good time. She has spent most of her time on her own and taking care of herself and, because of her secretive nature, is used to doing things without someone else's help.
However, her nonchalant persona seems to at least partly be an act, a defense mechanism to keep people at arm's length. She pretends not to care and to keep people back in order to protect herself. And while Lena has a lot of street-smarts and is pretty good at reading people, she's not very good dealing with them on an emotional front. She doesn't have a lot of experience with genuinely connecting with people, and uses sarcasm as a way to hide that she doesn't really know how to interact with others. She's good at pretending that she knows what she's doing, but she can only keep it up for so long.
Because despite her claims otherwise, Lena is in fact quite desperate for genuine affection. Her only "family" having been Magica, more interested in using her for revenge than actually treating as a person, Lena eventually discovers that she genuinely enjoys having friends, and admits to wanting to have a caring family, even including the arguments that come with it. Deep down, she is actually a caring individual, and comes to value her first real friendship over anything else, even at the cost of her own life.
